CEPO Domestic Elections Watch initiative is strongly urging the Leadership of the Revitalized National Transitional Legislative Assembly to pass the National Elections Act, 2012 ( admendments) bill, 2023 third reading within this week before the end of August, 2023. Conduct of credible, free, fair and peaceful elections is the only pathway for transitioning the country from violence to peace
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says timely enactment of the National Elections Act, 2012 (admendments) bill, 2023 will offer an opportunity of early reconstitution of the National Elections Commission and the Political Parties Council priori the head of UNMISS report of 30 September 2023 to the United Nations Secuirty Council on the status of political transitional process in South Sudan through the implementation of the pending tasks of the R-ARCSS. The parliament should take primary responsibility of rescuing the country from falling back into violence due to disagreements around the conduct of the national elections expected in December 2024
The Presidency has the responsibility to make political decisions urgently for resolving the political differences around the conduct of the national elections as expected by December2024. Any failure of the conducting credible, free, fair and peaceful elections or the country return to violence the presidency is the primary institution to be blamed not any institution or individuals. Mr Yakani stressed
Finally CEPO Domestic Elections Watch entity is worry about the delays in delivering the tasks that create the conducive environment for the conduct of the expected elections in December 2024 as political process of transitioning the country from violence to peace
