In letters dated June and addressed to 4 basketball players, President Salva Kiir Mayardit called all South Sudanese basketballers playing in the diaspora to join the national basketball team in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup that will take place in 3 Asian countries of Philippines, Indonesia and Japan this August 2023.
The call was made by the President through written letters to the four South Sudanese players in the NBA namely Bol Bol (son of late NBA legend Manut Bol) of Orlando Magic, Marial Makur Shayok of Maine Celtic, Wenyen Gabriel of Los Angeles Lakers and Johkhow Panom Thor of Charlotte Hornets.
So far South Sudan Basketball Federation has announced today that Wenyen Gabriel has joined the team. It remains to be seen if the remaining three; Bol Bol, Marial Shayok and Johkhow Panom Thor will also honour President Kiir’s call.
