JUBA, MAY 14. THEJUBAMIRROR. NEWS) — South Sudan opposition commander and leader of the Agwelek faction General Johnson Olony Thabo has arrived in the capital Juba, after a day-long delay at Malakal.
Olony who was last in Juba in 2013 was welcomed at Juba International Airport by some members officers of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) members of his advance team in the capital.
His return to Juba marks a significant phase in the implementation process of the Khartoum Peace Agreement he signed with President Salva Kiir Mayardit in January last year.
The deal negotiated by President Kiir’s security advisor Tut Gatluak provides for an immediate integration of Olony’s Agwelek forces into the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces.
Despite his commitment such as his decision to send an advance team to Juba, Olony has on several occasions said the agreement was not being implemented by the government.
Earlier this week, a large group of his advance team who have been in Juba since last year expressed disappointment at the lack of progress in the implementation and defected to Kiir’s side.
