KHARTOUM, APRIL 26, 2023 (THEJUBAMIRROR. NEWS ) – Former Sudanese President Omar al Bashir is currently receiving medical treatment at the Military Medical Corps in Omdurman, according to sources close to his family who spoke to Al Jazeera.
This comes after he and several other senior members of his regime were allowed to leave Kober Prison in Khartoum.
The prison police sources say guards at Kober Prison allowed inmates including al Bashir and his colleagues to leave due to the severe lack of basic necessities such as food and water.
The prison has reportedly been facing major shortages, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing deadly fighting in the country’s capital Khartoum and other important cities of Sudan which begun on April 15, 2023.
Al Bashir, who was ousted in a military coup in 2019, has been on trial for a range of charges including corruption, financial misconduct, killing of protesters during his regime, and for the military which brought him to power in 1989.
In a statement following their release, Ahmed Haroun, a senior member of the Bashir’s regime said they have moved out of prison and will provide safety for themselves, and that they will support the Sudanese army in their war against the RSF.
“We will stand with the Sudanese people and their armed forces in their battle against a family project supported regionally and internationally,” Haroun said in a recorded statement.
Reacting to this, several politicians such as Yasir Arman said the statement by Haroun that the Islamists would support the army means that they are behind the fighting in Sudan and that they intend to escalate the war which he said is not in the interest of the Sudanese people.
