JUBA, MARCH 23, 2022 (ThejubamirrorNews ) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has called on warring communities of Twic of Warrap State and Ngok Dinka of the disputed Abyei area to end the bloodshed and embrace peace.
Kiir made these remarks during a meeting with chiefs from Warrap and Abyei held in Kuajok, the capital of Warrap State on Monday.
Manhiem Bol Malek, Governor of Warrap State said President Kiir urged the two communities to embrace peace.
Bol said President Kiir also directed the chiefs to reopen roads connecting two areas to allow the free movement of people with their goods.
“President asked the two chiefs to open the roads because this is a public road, and he doesn’t want to hear again that road is being blocked by the armed youth.”
Dr. Chol Deng Alaak, Chief Administrator of Abyei Administrative Area accused politicians of inciting the violence between the two communities.
“Usually, the tribal conflict doesn’t last for more than two or three days but this is a very special situation where you can sense really other political groups got involved in all these things,” said Chol.
In February 2022, fighting erupted at Aneet market in Abyei Administrative Area over land disputed by the two communities.
Dozen were killed and more than 50,000 people mostly women and children were displaced as a result of the violence.
President Salva Kiir in the aftermath of the violence formed an ad-hoc committee to investigate the killings in the Aneet market.
On May 5th, 2022, leaders from the two communities reached an agreement to cease hostilities but later on fighting erupted again with both sides trading blame.
