The government has banned the National Security Services from making arrests without an arrest warrant, according to Dr. Martin Elia Lumoro, the Cabinet Affairs Minister.
President Salva Kiir and First Deputy Dr. Riek Machar have agreed to remove sections 54 and 55 of the National Security Law which previously allowed for warrantless arrests, Elia informed press in Juba.
The National Security Service Act of 2014, amended in September 2019, had given the National Security Service the power to arrest anyone without a warrant.
The decision to ban warrantless arrests comes as the unity government begins its two-year peace roadmap.
