A member of parliament in the Jonglei State Legislative Assembly is calling on the office of the president to include Gen. Simon Gatwech and Johnson Olony in the Rome Peace Talks.
Wany Bum Makhor, an MP from Uror South County, said the two rebel leaders have been disturbing the peace and causing havoc in parts of greater Upper Nile region. He added that the only solution to end the conflict on by absorbing them in government.
“I personally believe many South Sudanese have the same feeling that there is a need for inclusion of others like Gen. Simon Gatwech and Johnson Olony whose forces have been fighting each other and causing havoc among the communities,” said Makhor.
Last week, President Salva Kiir lifted the suspension on the Rome Peace Talks during a joint meeting with Pope Francis and other two visiting religious leaders.
Wany who is also the chairperson for information in Jonglei parliament applauded the president for lifting the suspension but stressed the need to include Gen Olony and Gatwech in the talks.
“These Kitgwang leaders who are fighting each other are causing chaos in South Sudan. We all know what happened in Fangak County and other parts of Upper Nile, it is a disaster,” Wany stressed.
“I believe that if the president includes them in the talk, it will have an impact.”
The lawmaker argued that including Gen. Simon Gatwech and Johnson Olony will halt blood shad in the country.
He advised if it is impossible to accommodate the duo, the government should create another channel to have then brought on the dialogue table
Wany stressed that living out other leaders in the peace implementation process may hinder the peace process in the country.
“Including these leaders in the peace process will be the best because when they are left out there will be a recurrence of fighting in other parts of the country and that will mean no progress in the peace agreement,” he said.
