The Interim Chairperson
The interim chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), Maj Gen Charles Gituai, has urged the national government to firmly roll-out the pending chapters of the agreement to maintain support from the international community.
Speaking to City Review on Tuesday, Gituai warned that the war in Ukraine had interfered with the global economy, making resources limited. He said that in this case, the international community would need an assurance of devotion to put more resources into the process because of other competing needs.
“If South Sudan does not put its house in order and commit itself to the implementation of the agreement. “We are seeing a situation where it risks being abandoned by the international community,” he said.
The RJMEC boss said there was “goodwill” from the region” to support the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement. He recalled how the IGAD Council of Ministers, at their meeting in Khartoum, South Sudan, promised unwavering support for the peace agreement.
According to Gituai, Kenyan President William Ruto’s recent visit demonstrated the East African Community’s commitment to South Sudan’s peace and stability.
He praised the achievements of the government in implementing the agreement but emphasised the need for civic space to help the citizens prepare for the elections, slated for 2024.
“I would call on the leadership of South Sudan to allow the people to be able to have civic or political space as we progress to the election so that people can be able to choose their leaders in the right way so that this country can be part of the international community,” he said.
South Sudan graduated the necessary unified forces in phase one and is expected to have the deployed. However, the government has decried the lack of arms due to the arms embargo that prevents the acquisition of weapons.
